The Run Down - Tuesday March 4, 2008

Have I mentioned the crazy amount of shows this week. I mean good gravy boat gazoog(wha?) even Tuesday is jammed packed. Here in Baltimore be sure to bear witness to Savory James performing an all Nirvana cover set at the Talking Head with 4th Horsemen, Nocnitsa, and Red Rocket. At the Black Cat in DC do yourself a favor and take in Say Hi and Caverns. Finally in Philly, the only place to be is Johnny Brenda's to see the one and only Cadence Weapon along with Born Ruffians and Ape School. Well I lied. There is one other place to be in Philly and that's at the First Unitarian Church where Matt Costa and Jonathan Rice perform.

Savor Savory James

Savory James is a three piece from Baltimore consisting of Rob Soma on vocals and guitar, Chris Brohawn on drums, and Josh Lundy on bass. So what do I think of them, you ask? They're pretty sweet. Savory James plays power pop/punk rock...no...punk rock/angry folk/indie power pop rock...no...music...yeah that's the one. Think Superdrag meets White Stripes meets The Clash meets...um...Savory James. They just released their debut, The Surgeon, on the Lifted and Gifted label in 2007 and it's a solid showing of energized and emotional rock. The main source of the energy is the thick guitar and wavering croon of lead singer/guitarist Rob Soma. His voice can take you from timid to fierce in an instant with his guitar going from hushed to blazing. The lyrics, which are surprisingly fluid and rich, spread from love to politics to religion over the course of the album. All in all Savory James is definitely a band to watch coming out of Baltimore. They have the emotion, grit, and enough pop sensibility to attract a wide audience. Next up...world domination, of course.

The Run Down - Friday January 4, 2008

If you want to be busy tonight, there are definitely plenty of options. Hopefully your first choice would be attending a fabulous art opening, Society Of Mary, at space 2640 (St. John's) on 27th and St. Paul in Baltimore. It's from 7-10 and features the assemblage work of April Wood, Claes Gabriel, Kelly Walker, Alyssa Dennis, Jed Digney, Outtama Tulachahn, Charlotte Benedetto, Kathy Fahey, Matthew Craft, Liz Kasameyer, Neilie Meyer, Laurent Hrybyk (that's me), David Cunningham, Chris Taylor, and Missing Eyes. There also be some great music there as well including Cakes Of Light, Violet Hour, Orion Rigel Dommisse, and Noble Lake. I hope to see you there. Also in Baltimore is a great show at the Lo-Fi Social Club with Savory James, Dirty Marmaduke Flute Squad, Wail Sounds, and Butane Variations. Finally if you head on up to Philly, you can check out Blood Feathers, The Cobbs, and Cowmuddy at Johnny Brenda's. Have a good one!
