VIDEO - Headlights & Meligrove Band

Here's two fine new videos for your viewing pleasure. The first is Cherry Tulips by Headlights. It was directed by Julian Acosta and is filled with beautiful music, chairs, and of course floating tulips.

mp3: Headlights - Cherry Tulips

The next video is for Our Love Will Make The World Go Round by Meligrove Band. Directed and animated by Mike White this vid takes me back to the days when Saturday Morning cartoons were awesome even if they were on at 6am. The song is pretty awesome too.

Again this line up is pretty good, and if it were not for the fact that it's on the opposite side of the United States from me, I would definitely consider going.

Not Those United States, THESE UNITED STATES

So I've been waiting for this one for a while now. I think Jesse Elliott and David Strackany aka These United States have been waiting for it also. A Picture of the Three of Us at the Gate to the Garden of Eden is their brand spanking new LP that comes out on March 4th. For those that are unfamiliar with These United States, then let me bring you up to speed. They play soulful folk rock that doesn't blend with the ordinary too well. There's spice and flavor with each note and verse. And there's something else. Maybe it was the open mind I had when I first gave this album a listen. There was a freedom within the music that really allowed my thoughts to wander through this world created by Strackany's unique production and Elliott's emotional croon. I felt as if I was floating on a little row boat drifting out to sea, singing along with some fantasy melody, and it was the only thing keeping me sane. Strange, I know. But hey, I am what I am and These United States are that friggin good.

Pasta Vs. Panther

Music has really been kicking my butt as of late. First Vampire Weekend, then MGMT, then Yeasayer, now Panther. This Portland duo just released their debut 14 KT God on Kill Rock Stars and it's a head trip in every sense of the word. Panther forces you to make up new phrases to describe the music that the play. I'll call it danciehalliefunkytastindierocknroll. Some how the ghost of James Brown is channeling his energy through Charlie Salas-Humara, but he gets confused along the way and just loses it. Wait a minute. Scrap that analogy. It's like LCD Soundsystem lost the power supply for all their fancy electronic gizmos and decided to just kick old school...super awesome old school. Mix that with afro/cuban/brazilian/bonham beats by Joe Kelly and you've got one friggin bees knees type band in Panther. Don't say I didn't warn you. Check them out at the Red and the Black in DC on March 20th and at the Khyber in Philly on March 21st.

Toofer Toosday - Miwa Gemini & Radar Bros.

Miwa Gemini is a musician from New York who has a new LP, This I s How I Found You coming out on March 18th on Rockpark Records. Gemini brings me back to the first time I heard bands like Persephone's Bees or maybe Cat Power. Whispers of piano, guitar, and mandolin line the recesses of each song. They live there quietly moving the melody and tempo as Miwa's voice sleepily paints lush lyrics over them. The end result are late night songs that settle in your mind and resonate for hours after the first note. She seems to be playing east and west coasts in the coming months, but her next show is on March 8th at LIT in New York.

mp3: Miwa Gemini - Something Ordinary

As many might know, Radar Bros. just released a new album, Auditorium, this year on Merge Records. When I hear bands like Radar Bros. a smile slowly brews across my face. The Radar Bros. play soulful light indie rock coupled with songwriting chops in the same room as Tom Waits and Tom Petty. I know what you're saying. "Here's some blogger throwing Waits and Petty into their review of some band again." Well, I may be "some blogger", but Radar Bros. are not "some band". They're a band that hits you with country twanged vocal harmonies and soothing guitar lines every chance they get. WATCH OUT! They've got me. They'll get you too. Especially if you're at SXSW this year. They are playing on the 12th for the Forcefield PR Party @ Emo Jrs, the 13th @ End of an Ear Record and Tapes, the 14th @ The Parish for the Merge showcase, and the 15th @ the Urban Outfitters Party and the Pop Culture Party.

We Have A Contest - Grand Ole Party

UPDATED: We have a winner!!! Congratulations Alex K from NJ! We hope you enjoy the album as much as we did. There are many reasons to love San Diego. The sun. The beach. The zoo. Vito. And now....Grand Ole Party (which we have a contest for...check out the end of the post). This band has the spirit and energy of classic rock bands like Led Zeppelin and Jefferson Airplane, yet being a three piece outfit, their sound is crisper and cleaner. There's no effects and psychedelic swirlings spoiling the honest to goodness rock being produced. The stand out is Kristin Gundred's voice. It drives the songs and drums up distant memories of Janis Joplin. Except Joplin didn't play drums. There's something about the singer/drummer combo that is just...cool. They've already played with a host of awesome acts like Rilo Kiley, Vampire Weekend (who?), and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They'll also be playing the upcoming SXSW then touring with Rogue Wave in April. They stop off on that tour to the First Unitarian Church In Philly on April 15th and the 9:30 Club in DC on April 16th. Their debut album Humanimals was just released on DH Records earlier in February. You might want to go grab yourself a copy...or...oh yeah...THERE'S A SWEET CONTEST RIGHT HERE ON THIS BLOG FOR A T-SHIRT AND CD!!! Just leave your email in the comments and by the end of the week we'll select a random winner. So if you like it, do yourself a favor and throw your name into the proverbial hat. Hooray!

In The Kitchen With Bellman Barker Part 3

So here we are on the third and final chapter of my epic conversation with the awe inspiring Bellman Barker. The night was growing late. My senses were weary, but we pressed on knowing that this could very well be the greatest interview conducted in the history of mankind...sort of.

PP: When your soul speaks, what does it say?
BB:

PP: Those aren't even words...oh well. If you could add one instrument or piece of technology to your life, what would it be?
BB:

PP: Hells yeah! If you had a budget for a super spectacular stage show, what would you go for?
BB:

PP: Hmmm...you guys seem to enjoy felines a bit, huh? What songs have you covered?
BB:

PP: What songs would you like to cover?
BB:

PP: Please let me hear it when you do!!! Are you working on new material?
BB:

PP: Those are monkeys...you work with monkeys? Explain.
BB:

PP: That didn't explain anything. Explain...your song writing process.
BB:

PP: I saw that one coming. Okay, let's try this: As a child what music had the biggest influence on you?
BB:

PP: Nice. What are you reading?
Aaron:

Thomas:

Steve:

PP: Again with the lions. Favorite smurf?
BB:

PP: Favorite dwarf?
BB:

PP: Favorite time of day?
BB:

PP: So those answers tell me that you are angry, vain, and like to PAAAARRTEEE! Nice! m If your band was an animal, what would it be?
BB:

PP: I don't even know why I asked that. I already knew the answer. Fill in the blank. ________ is the root of all evil.
BB:

PP: Don't ever talk about coffee that way. Fill in the blank. Happiness is _____________.
BB:

PP: Fill in the blank. All I want for Christmas is ___________.
BB:

PP: Where do you get this stuff from. Fill in the blank. Hand is to glove as Bellman Barker is to _______________.
BB:

On that note, I thank you all for reading. This was the first of which will hopefully be an ongoing feature of this blog. Bellman Barker definitely started it off with a bang. I can't thank them enough. You can catch them tomorrow night in Deleware at Mojo 13, Feb. 27th @ GWU, and March 21st @ the Black Cat with Le Loup and The Ruby Suns. Go support 'em!!!

Say Hi To Say Hi

Say Hi formerly Say Hi To Your Mom is and surrounds Eric Elbogen. I remember listening to Say Hi To Your Mom years back and assuming an affinity for it. I guess it slowly faded to the nether regions of my hard drive, because I had to search to find it again. The search was brought on by this new album, The Wishes And The Glitch, he just released. Something was different with this album from the previous releases. Call it an emotional change, a thematic change, or a change of sound. Whatever. It was a change. And I quite enjoyed it. Maybe it was the move to Seattle...or the change in name. He succeeds where others have failed. Electro pop is a difficult genre to be in. You can easily be labeled the next 'Postal Service' just for the use of electronic beats and melodramatic lyrics. A lot of these bands just fade into oblivion. Why? They let the technology distort their style of song writing. This is not the case with Say Hi. Elbogen has his fingerprints ingrained in each beat, whistle, croon, guitar note, and sample on The Wishes And The Glitch. This allows me to listen and love the sarcastic lyrics and catchy hooks rather than scratch my head over some bizarre sample or over layered sonic fuzz. You can catch Eric and Say Hi on March 3rd @ Johnny Brenda's in Philly or March 4th at the Black Cat in DC.

Friday (I'm A Remix)

Man it looks crappy outside. I miss the days of being a little kid, waking up and seeing snow, anticipating the day of from school, then finally hearing the news and being so over joyed. No such luck these days. Now I look at the snow and think man it's going to suck driving to work in that. Oh well at least it's Friday and more importantly, pay day.

In The Kitchen With Bellman Barker Part 2

So here's the second installment of the spectacle that is Bellman Barker. My mind was throbbing from the first wave of images and video, but it was about to get a lot more interesting....

PP: What's your musical guilty pleasure?
BB:

PP: Holy crap that's some good stuff. Which band member has the most delusions of grandeur?
BB:

PP: Should have known. Bass players...they're all the same. Which band member has the most delusions in general?

BB:

PP: That's a lion...oh...I see. What will be the next big thing in music?
BB:

PP: Robot rock? I've always thought that shining moment of success was to be included in a Jeopardy question. What would your answer be to the Jeopardy question, "Who is Bellman Barker?"
BB: "This one hit wonder toiled for twenty years before finally scoring a hit song that actually started as a rolaids commercial."

PP: What color is your music?
BB:

PP: Oh Hugh. So tell me, what is your motto?
BB:

PP: I thought that was Starbuck's motto. When touring what's the ride like?
BB:

PP: Kickin' it old school. If you had the opportunity to "pimp" that ride, what would be the end result?
BB:

PP: Where did you all meet?
BB:

PP: Who is your idol?
BB:

PP: I think he's everyone's idol. How large is your music collection?
BB:

PP: Awwwww. What is your favorite instrument?
BB:

PP: I always thought there should be a handle there. Continuing on...if there was a giant bonfire in the center of the city and it was mandatory for you to bring one item to be incinerated, what would it be?
BB:

PP: Mmmm...chicken. Star Trek or Star Wars?
BB:

PP: There's the proof of Roger Clemens and steroids. What's in your current music rotation right now?
BB:

PP: Same here. What's the most amazing thing you've ever seen?
BB:

PP: If you could sit down with any person who has ever existed and ask them a question, who would it be and what would you ask?
Aaron(BB lead singer/guitarist): I would ask Tom(BB bass player) why he has to be such a jerk all the time.

PP: I see....so...what super power do you have?
BB:

PP: Nice.

And that's not all folks. Stay tuned for the final chapter of Pasta Primavera Vs. Bellman Barker!!

It's Thursday! And what a fine Thursday it is. There are two super fantastic shows tonight to our south. At the Black Cat in DC, Atlas Sound, White Rainbows, and Valet perform. If you really want to get fancy (not fancy at all, but it sounds good), go check out Evangelicals, Headlights, and We Were Pirates at IOTA in Virginia. In The Kitchen With Bellman Barker Part 1

You all know that we here at Pasta Primavera are big fans of DC's Bellman Barker. They roped us in with their beautifully crafted indie pop gems and then blew us away with their live show. So it should come to no ones surprise that they are the first band to be featured in our "In The Kitchen" interview segment. I know I know. NOT ANOTHER BORING INTERVIEW! Well don't worry. It's not. You may not know it, but Bellman Barker are masters of communication (similar to masters of the universe, but much cooler). They harness the ability to send movies, images, text, and witty remarks directly through the cosmos and into your brain!!!! And I just thought they were a great band, but I soon found out they were much more when I sat down with Aaron, Thomas, Steve and the gang...

PP: Who the heck are you guys anyway?
BB:

PP: What is the inspiration for that crazy band name?
BB:

PP: Why don't you have more cowbell?
BB:

PP: Oookaaaay...what is the best band you ever played with?
BB:

PP: Makes sense. What is the worst band you ever played with?
BB: ICP

PP: Do you now? Is your drummer deaf?
BB:

PP: What is the best concert you've ever attended?
BB:

PP: You were at that show? Wow. So tell me what bands are the most over-rated?
BB:

PP: Duh. What bands are the most under - rated?
BB:

PP: Describe your perfect day in 3 activities or less.
BB: Wake up, drink an orange julius while listening to Tatu, fall asleep.

PP: Orange Julius isn't an activity...it's a WAY OF LIFE. What venue/festival would be your dream gig?
BB:

PP: Keep on dreaming. Dang it! What the hell is wrong with this country?
BB:

PP: Word to that. Poker or spades?
BB: Hearts. Duh.

PP: I said poker or spades! No...wait... The Simpsons or South Park?
BB: South Park is pedestrian.

PP: Red wine or white wine?
BB: A good bordeaux.

PP: What's the best band you are listening to that no one knows about?
BB: We were listening to the Monks the other day--that was good.

PP: I'll say it here first. That's the hair style of the future!!!!

That's just a taste of our first meeting. Part two they delve into the realm of Lost Boys, Billy Idol...and other things.

The Run Down - Wednesday February 20, 2008

First off, before you go see any live music tonight, be sure to catch the lunar eclipse. Sometimes nature has the best performances. After that head on down to the Ottobar to check out Akrobatik with Snapz, Make Shift Deluxe, and T.M.F.. Akrobatik is a great MC with a flow and mentality similar to KRS One (though still worlds apart) and should provide a great show. If hip hop and Baltimore aren't in your sights, maybe Black Mountain and Bon Iver will do the trick in Philly at Johnny Brenda's. Or if you really want some indie head over to The Fire to see the ever changing sound of Tiger Saw along with Boatload of Madmen, Joshua Park, Anna Vogelzang, and Nu Cultures. First things first though, make sure you look up.

Toofer Toosday - The Honeydrips & Eugene Francis Jnr

The Honeydrips is the musical pseudonym for Swedish singer/song writer Mikael Carlsson. Last year he released a fairly sweet album on Sincerely Yours called Here Comes The Future. On this album Carlsson swims between atmospheric acoustic heart songs, pop sweepers, and electropop movers. When I first ran through the album, I felt a little uneasy from the sound and tempo changes. After the third or fourth time, I found myself settling in to Carlsson's unique voice and style of song writing. I also found that the broad spectrum of the album brought a surprising freshness to further listens. The Honeydrips play the Black Cat on April 2nd with fellow Swede Jens Lekman. This is a show everyone should attend (and probably already are planning on attending).

mp3: The Honeydrips - Trying Something New --> website --> buy
mp3: The Honeydrips - (Lack of) Love Will Tear Us Apart

I wondered why I seemed to be so entranced with Eugene Francis Jnr's music. I really did. Now I come to find his birthday is on March 8th, the day before mine. I guess my inner piscean heard the connection. It heard the basement electronic loops layered with simple yet tantalizing pop melodies. You may have heard him opening for Tegan and Sarah recently, but my guess is you'll be hearing much more from this Welsh singer/songwriter. His album The Golden Beatle is set to release on April 28th on Legion.

Nothing like a good ole laaaaazzzyy Sunday. If you do happen to make it out of the house today, there are a couple of supremely good shows. The first being at a new venue in Alexandria, VA called the Lab. It's a all ages benefit show for Cal Robbins and features performances by Tereu Tereu, Bellman Barker, and Jawbox (On Cello). If you like electro pop travel on up to Philly to catch Freezepop, Boy In Static, and The Model at the North Star Bar. Or you can just relax on this mellow Sunday with some music.

Well if you live in or are traveling to Philadelphia tonight you will have a multitude of great shows to choose from. At Johnny Brenda's you can catch some great indie hip hop with Food For Animals, Mi Ami, and Pissed Jeans. If that doesn't satisfy your hip hop quota then, swing over to the Tritone to see the Alien Architect. If you like indie rock, I mean really good indie rock, the North Star has you covered with Drug Rug, The Bye Byes, Ezra Furman & The Harpoons, and Movable Type. Finally the Fire has the last day of the Northern Liberties Winter Music Festival and it has a super sweet line up. Illinois, Drink Up Buttercup, Cheers Elephant, Peasant, Crooked Looks, East Hundred, and Creaky Boards will all be performing,

Of course if you don't have tickets, you're out of luck...sold out. Here in Baltimore, The Red Vines are having their CD release party (see our review here of the album) at the Golden West Cafe in Hampden along with Caleb Stine and the Brakemen and Small Sur. Want More? Private Eleanor.

Today, being the infamous V-Day, should be the day to sit down, light a fire (or a candle), find a companion, and listen to Private Eleanor (if you don't have a companion, that's okay too. Celebrate yourself!). A local band, Private Eleanor, has played around town for many years, so much so that they recently went on an indefinite hiatus. Though I am completely heartbroken that there aren't any imminent shows lined up for them (except for an intimate show on Feb. 25th @ the Galaxy Hut in VA), I am still comforted by the wonderful sound of their last album, Sweethearting. Released in 2007 on the Beechfields (Among Wolves, The Red Vines) label, Sweethearting accomplishes what many pop bands fail to. Many pop bands focus on the melody and arrangements (which are important) so much that their lyrics and meaning become transparent. Private Eleanor overcome that hurdle blending savvy folk pop melodies with genuine lyrics and heartfelt performances. They astutely combine the catchiness of bands like Imperial Teen with the tempestuous flavoring of Elliot Smith. Truly a gem of 2007. Support this band and pray this hiatus doesn't carry over too long.

The Run Down - Thursday February 14, 2008

Before I run down the list of ridiculously good Philly shows, I must mention a fine Valentine's Day show right here in Baltimore. The Lo-Fi Social Club is dimming the lights and lighting candles for Famous Lovers and the Soundscapes. Find someone and go to that show. If you're in Philly, you can't complain about the shortage of shows for the next couple of days. Today is no different. Johnny Brenda's has A Sunny Day In Glasgow, Remote Islands, and The Offering. North Star has Small Town Fires, Sounds Under Radio, Hey Angel, and The Armchairs. Finally the epic Northern Liberties Winter Music Festival continues at the Fire with a folkish night of These United States, Wes Matthews and the New Way Down, Extraordinaires, Birdie Busch, Hezekiah Jones, Bee Team, and Sister Three. AmpLive Is Alive and Well!!

Okay so many of you have probably heard some of AmpLive's Radiohead remixes a few months ago. You may not know he was trying to release an album of these remixes. Well long story short, he forgot to clear it with Radiohead and the label, there was some cease and desists issued, and we all thought it was dead in the water. Nope. Rainydayz Remixes is out now and it's completely free for download. I was pretty fond of the earlier remixes of Weird Fishes and Nude, but when I looked at the tracklisting for this 8 song album and saw Video Tapez and Del The Funky Homosapien paired together, I just about lost my mind. With good cause too. That track is the BEE'S KNEES!!!! Find out for yourself.

A Dose of The LK

The LK are from Sweden. Their full name is actually The Love Of Kevin, Colour, Chaos And The Sound Of K, but I guess The LK is easier to remember. This duo is comprised of Lindefelt and Fredrik has a new album, Vs The Snow, set up to be released on March 4 on The Kora Records. They'll have a US tour to follow including dates in DC and SXSW. That's the facts. Now here's the scoop. If there was ever an example of perfect electro-noise-pop, then The LK is it. Some could say they resemble a European version of the Postal Service, but there are notable differences. The Postal Service's sound evolved from fragmented electronic sounds combined with Gibbard's hushed melodramatic vocals. The LK is textured, smooth, almost hip-hop/dance floor driven beats with Lindefelt's catchy new wave vocals bouncing all over them. What usually kills albums like these is the repetitive nature of them, but Vs The Snow changes speeds, emotions, and sounds often enough to keep me submerge in their groove. After the first listen, I found pressing play again and again. The LK are complex enough to satisfy my mind and poppy enough to satisfy my ears.

Toofer Toosday - An American Chinese & The Republic Tigers

It's not too often you come across a band that has such a solidified identity and image so early on. An American Chinese not only has a unique sound, they also have a defined visual representation throughout their website, posters, and promos. I guess I could equate it to how I felt when I first discovered Fishboy's website and music. Why is this important? Well for me it shows they're serious for one. It also shows that they aren't just looking to play pretty songs for us to sing a long. They have a purpose and an emotion to put forth. Anyway. I thought I'd mention that before explaining that their EP, Panic Pilgrim, that I received recently is simply fantastic. The seven piece from Philadelphia blends a fun poppy sound that can be large and introspective like the Arcade Fire or small and personal like the Violent Femmes. These guys and gals have officially put themselves on the list for bands to watch. Apparently they're at work on a full length, and you can find them playing a variety of shows in the PA area. We'll keep you posted.

mp3: An American Chinese - Blaine Wiggins Failed Musician --> website --> buy
mp3: An American Chinese - No No Like That

I received another EP recently that also blew me away. It was from The Republic Tigers, a five piece out of Kansas City. This band might be in for something big. The EP was released on Chop Shop in December of 2007 and there is an album in the works for this year. They remind me of everything I love about the Shins while blending a unique, almost ambient quality to their melodies. I can always tell a great EP when I find myself eagerly wanting more after it ends. That was the case for this disc. I was pretty much sold when the thumping drum line surprisingly kicked in on the third track 'The Drums' (fitting, I guess). The list of bands to watch grows even larger with the addition of The Republic Tigers. If you're heading to SXSW this year, make this band a priority to see.

The Run Down - Sunday February 10, 2008

So it's Sunday and you find yourself looking for some not-so-ordinary entertainment. Well the Black Cat has that for you ten fold. Brian Carpenter's Beat Circus has come to town with his brand of post-cabaret/new weird americana music. Beat Circus' songs are based on factual people and events from the turn of the century Coney Island Circus of the same name. So if you want to witness bizarre, yet oddly entertaining historical music, head on down to the Black Cat tonight. You'll also find the genre transcending band, The Cassettes there. They play rockabilly/CCR-esque/blues/folk/indie rock. They're a good fit with Beat Circus and should prove to be a great event. If you aren't quite into that scene, maybe you would enjoy Liars and no Age playing the First Unitarian Church in Philly. Enjoy the last day of the weekend while you can. Monday lurks.

A Remix & The Run Down - Saturday February 9, 2008

Finally it has happened. When I first popped in MGMT's super great fantastic album Oracular Spectacular, I had two thoughts. The first was, "Dang this is the bee's knees!" The second was, "There's gonna be some killer remixes of this." Sadly I waited and waited, checked the hype machine, checked my email, checked my mailbox, but nothing....until last night. I received an email last night containing the first remix of MGMT's Kids blended with DFA 1979. It's great. Check it.

Friday (I'm A Remix)

You know what depresses me? Politics. I'm sure they depress many of you too. The thing that gets me is the lies. How do I know who is telling the truth about what they say? Is anybody telling the truth about what they say? The candidates can say anything they want to get the vote, but what are they really thinking. So here's my plan of action. Scrap the debates. Get rid of them. Instead, have you seen that crappy Fox TV show, 'The Moment Of Truth'? The country should adopt that format instead of debates. People from around the country can YouTube in their questions and BOOM! They have to tell the truth because they're monitored by a lie detector. The only problem is, what happens when we find out all of the candidates are lying? Sorry...sometimes I feel like ranting...and raving...but mostly ranting.

So you're bummed that you missed not one Vampire Weekend shows, but two Vampire Weekend shows. Well luckily today there are a few good ones to help you cope. Album Review - Nada Surf - Lucky

Lucky has absolutely nothing to do with luck. It has everything to do with talent, vision, innovation, and perseverance. The 5th full length album by Nada Surf may be their best yet, gleaming with passion and growth. Lucky is a branching out for Nada Surf. This is the first time they have widely incorporated extra instruments on a record, including strings and piano on Weightless, xylophone on Weightless, and horns on Ice on the Wings. The versatility in song structure and instruments reflects a mature band that really knows how to write songs (Are You Lightning especially). The album is both fresh and grounded in the Nada Surf tradition, with exceptional drum work from Ira Elliot, hooking bass from Daniel Lorca, and ever improving vocals from Matthew Caws. Seriously, his vocals seem to get better every day.

I think the new album is absolutely phenomenal. It has all the rockin' elements of their earlier work, and includes some of the more innovative tracks you're likely to hear this year, especially The Fox. Please, please, please go see these guys live. They are amazing. And getting better with age.

Their live show itinerary is HERE.

The pasta crew will be in attendance April 11th at Terminal 5 in NYC and April 12th in D.C. at the 9:30 club. Come rock out with us.

Age of The Epochs

The definition of the word epoch is a distinctive period of time. For a band, The Epochs have seemingly set the standards pretty high just with their name. But after seeing them live and spinning their new album a couple of times, I'm beginning to understand. The Epochs combine crisp indie electro pop music with the sweet falsetto harmonies of guitarist Hays and keyboardist Ryan. The vocals come across as top 40 pop, but somehow it doesn't bother me. I really don't know why. I think it's because I saw them live first. The energy Hays and Ryan put out on stage is powerful and beautiful. The passion for their music is clearly evident and quickly turn what could be average pop songs into driving emotional performances. All in all they captivated me from the first note to the last. When I listen to their album, I still feel it. I can't separate myself from the live show (Rock and Roll Hotel last year if you were wondering). They've got me. Go see them live (Mercury Lounge, February 12th). Then buy their album (On sale February 19th). You'll see. They'll get you too. Hmmm...I'm beginning to understand their name a little better now.

Sewn Into Teletextile

A few weeks back I received Care Package, the 2007 debut release of Teletextile, in the mail. The cover bears the resemblance of a package wrapped in brown paper with photos bound to it with hemp rope. It was as if I was receiving a gift from a long lost relative or a friend overseas. I took the disc on my travels for the night. Dark and rainy, I had to drive slow allowing me to completely submerge myself in the music that followed. The first track, Come To Bed, draws you in with light layers of strings and bells. Then Pamela Martinez's vocals start. This is Teletextile. Martinez's voice is smooth and soulful. It tells the story with the sheer melody and inflection of it. Brian Hamilton accompanies her in playing various instruments throughout Care Package creating a sparse yet expansive sound. After repeated listens I often drew the comparison to Psapp (mainly for the production side), but Martinez's vocal range is broader and more defined. Based in Brooklyn, Teletextile has developed somewhat of a stellar live show incorporating video into the production. Go find out for yourself tomorrow night at the Lo-Fi in Baltimore. They'll also be playing The Outlook Loft in VA on the 9th and The Midway in NYC on March 4th.

Too bad I'm not one of the lucky few that scored tickets to it. Let me know how it goes. Don't be down if you can't make it because you can simply skip on over to the Red and the Black for Bell Hollow, Mellodrone, and The Opposite Sex. Gooooo Wednseday!

According to Bonnaroo.com, tickets will be available next Saturday, February 16th.

BTW, way to suck NME. You call yourself "the world's fastest music news service" and claim that you will reveal a headliner at midnight eastern, and here it is almost 1:00 eastern with no update at all. I get it if you're behind, but that is pathetic. Most blogs have crushed you for news. Way to fail. Go blogs.

UPDATE: Even more ridiculousness from NME. They did eventually post a "surprise headliner" late last night. But apparently they can't read and reported it as Led Zeppelin, rather then the confirmed LEZ Zeppelin. The story was even picked up briefly by the AP, before a rapid redaction. Details HERE.

Bonnaroo 2008 line-up likely released tonight

The Tennessean is reporting that they will have the line-up for the 2008 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival tonight at midnight central time. The full story is HERE.

Well, that means it'll be a late night for me, and many others on the east coast. The anticipation is killing me.

UPDATE: NME.com says they will have a "surprise Bonnaroo headliner" announcement at midnight eastern time.

Toofer Toosday - Weinland & Nicole Reynolds

John Adam Weinland Shearer, or simply Weinland, worked for years in a floundering mental health system. I read this after I had given his upcoming LP, La Lamentor (Badman), a couple of spins, but the pain and torment of those lives he was intertwined that is sewn throughout this album is hit me immediately. Many, including myself, hear flares of Neil Young and tones of Elliott Smith echoing throughout Weinland's songs which is probably the greatest complement any song writer can get. Still Weinland has his own voice...wavering yet smooth...definitely not over the top. He lets his lyrics soak into his guitar, and he let's his guitar drive each song. The production behind the vocals and guitar provide an emotional lift when needed. Whether it's strings or pedal steel guitars, they seem to flow in at the right times and fade out when the moment is over. Overall La Lamentor might have taken a couple of listens to get into, but in the end it won me over. It's set to be released on March 4th of this year with a tour to follow.

Nicole Reynolds hails from Pittsburgh, but currently finds herself in Philadelphia and a small organic farm in western PA. Formally schooled in jazz guitar and composition, Reynolds clearly has a grasp on the fundamentals of song writing. That's not what impresses me though. You see...I'm a BIG Bob Dylan fan. BIG. What makes Dylan so grand in my eye is that he never lets the music get in the way of what he's trying to say. He presents himself as a storyteller, poet, and political activist who's method of speaking is through song. I feel the same thing emanating from Nicole Reynold's work. She may not channel the profound storytelling aspect of Dylan, but her poetic verses are deep reverberations of her soul's travels. That might sound a bit over dramatic, but hey, I'm allowed. Aside from the lyrics, Reynold's voice seals the deal. Raspy and dark some moments, but then alive and brilliant the next. I couldn't quite put my finger on who it reminded me of, but then it hit me. Her voice has an old vaudeville sound (similar to one of our faves, Vandaveer) blended with the vibrancy and energy of Sondre Lerche. Nicole Reynolds released her second album, This Arduous Alchemy, last year and can be found playing local venues around Philly and beyond.

Dwelling On The Bell

While listening to The Bell's debut album, Make Some Quiet (Badman Recording Co.), I decided to peruse their myspace to see what the deal was. Under influences, Big Star was the first, Flaming Lips was the last, and the Psychedlic Furs was smack dab in the middle. Those bands combine pop song writing abilities while exploring experimental audio techniques at the same time. While The Bell doesn't push the envelope quite as much as those bands (theire myspace motto is 'moderately pushing the envelope since 2006'), they do play superb dramatic pop songs that stay with you. In the end isn't that all any one wants. Hailing from Sweden, this three piece has captured the 1980s pop sound (the good 80s not the bad) and incorporated a modern twist ala Interpol. To further propel you towards this band I will point out that Badman Recording Co. is also the home of My Morning Jacket. The Bell sounds nothing like them (not many people do), but that's good company to be around. Go ahead and ring The Bell...after all...it tolls for you (and you thought I wasn't gonna say it...but I did...but you thought I wasn't...but I did).

The Run Down - Saturday February 2, 2008

There are two shows worth mentioning going on tonight. If you missed A Sunny Day In Glasgow last night at the Lo-Fi, you check them out tonight at the Velvet Lounge in DC along with Screen Vinyl Image, The Offering, and Twin Earth. Also if you missed The Spinto band at the 8x10 on Thursday, you can check them out tonight in Philly at Johnny Brenda's with The Whigs and Plants and Animals. Sweet.

The Run Down - Friday February 1, 2008

It's the first of the month...wake up...get up...go see some shows. The question is...which one? Well here are your options. In Philly there are two super sweet concerts. The first being National Eye, The Sw!ms and Pepi Ginsberg at Johnny Brenda's. The second is Sarsaparilla, Famous Lovers, Nicole Reynolds, and Alex Rodes at the Fire. In DC there are also two super sweet shows. The first is Exit Clov, Army of Me, Good Night States, and The Dance Party at the Rock and Roll Hotel. The second is at the Black Cat. Unfortunately Celebration has canceled from this show, but DC's Junior League has graciously filled in to play along with one of my new faves, Shortstack and Suns of Guns. Finally there are two more super sweet shows here in Charm City. The Talking Head hosts Ilad, Yeveto, Blackbirds, and Andy Abelow. If you want some serious rock with no fillers, then come with Pasta Primavera to the Lo-Fi to see Avec, Remote Islands, Karmella's Game, and A Sunny Day In Glasgow. Talk about the ultimate run down!
